Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Camp Campos celebrates family fun and recreation. With busy lives working in medicine and raising two young daughters, the owners of this getaway reached out to us to design a spot to unwind without distractions. They had two goals for their home – adaptability and expandability.

This unique structure not only blends into its natural surroundings but also is able to expand and evolve with the family that lives inside. The family envision this home as something that will be cherished for generations to come. The design needed to be comfortable whether there were two people there or ten. The completed home features a succinct and functional layout with a total of three bedrooms, a bunk room, and two and a half bathrooms.

The property this cabin sits on was once part of an old logging trail near the lake edge. The architects used this to their advantage. Always wanting to disturb the site as little as possible, they chose to use the path of the logging road instead of cutting into the trees. It makes the home feel secluded from the community roads and neighbors.

The design is a compact and practical duel-cabin concept, with an easy relationship to the outdoors. The two cabins are connected by a middle section, or a transparent “bridge”, created to be a modern mirror of the traditional dogtrot breezeway seen in many historic Appalachian structures. The meandering drive brings you down to the home where a linear graded lawn with a fire pit is the first element to greet you. This was purposeful so that outdoor living was the introduction to the home. A bridge off the main living space flows seamlessly onto the linear lawn, perfect for enjoying the view by the fire or for setting up a tent.
