Creating contemporary living space and marketable retail units out of two underutilized 1920s commercial structures was the goal of this mixed-use project. Fourteen residences and four storefront shops were carved out of the 27,000 square feet of dilapidated space. The largest storefront was divided to provide an entry and elevator access for the upper level residences. A new, landscaped secondary residential entry was provided adjacent to the rear parking court. This project introduced a new level of downtown residential living and retail shopping to Asheville in the mid 1980s, which helped spur the city center’s revitalization.
